about us

The Virginia Hotel, now known as the Vantage State Building, was built in 1925 by the Frost-Whited Investment Company in Shreveport at the then staggering cost of approximately $500,000. Another $125,000 was spent on furnishings that were shipped in from Chicago. The citizens of Monroe raised $75,000 for the lot to house the hotel with the sole request that the company build a hotel of “the finest quality.”

Designed by the Mann and Stern architectural firm from Little Rock, the hotel building was built in the Colonial style and featured 160 rooms, each with a private bath or shower, which was considered quite a luxury at the time. The 6-story structure, built of reinforced concrete and steel faced in tapestry brick and trimmed in stone, featured two ballrooms, The Cheerio Bar, two private dining rooms, a barbershop, the Virginia Beauty Parlor, The Virginia Coffee Shop, a restaurant, a pharmacy, a news and cigar stand, a pressing shop, and a rooftop garden.

The main entrance on Saint John Street is through a broad foyer at the end of which is a beautiful two-story lobby with massive columns of imported marble and a backlit pearlescent ceiling. Overlooking the lobby is the mezzanine floor which forms a hollow square around the lobby below. On this floor, is a ballroom which showcases a large floor made of fine polished maple. This floor also housed the main dining room, as well as a banquet hall and two private dining rooms.

The Vantage Building Banquet room was a great place to hold my wedding and reception. The layout and access of the room was great. The place is already beautiful without decorating. I could not have asked for better people to work with from the time I made the appointment to the day after the wedding to clean up, they were great. The room has a great lighting aspect that can be arranged to be changed throughout the night. I had different lighting for my wedding and my reception. The room also has a great DJ/Band setup through the sound system if needed. Depending on how you decorate, the room allows for plenty of room for guests and dancing. My guest had a great time and kept talking about how beautiful the room was. I highly recommend the Vantage Building Banquet room.

Amanda Gates

My husband and I were married May 17th, 2014. Earlier in the year we had been to a wedding reception held at Vantage and we knew without a doubt we wanted to celebrate our special day there too. We were not disappointed! Everything was wonderful, from the layout of the room, to having a kitchen and most importantly the kind and friendly people of Vantage who helped out. The one thing I had wanted at the reception was a light canopy over the dance floor and I was thankful that Vantage was on board with my idea and allowed us to see it through. We even had a technical moment with our lights and a member of their staff saved the day and was able to solve the problem. There were so many features of this room that we loved but one of our favorites was how we could adjust the lightening to fit the mood of the room and put a spotlight on the cakes. We also loved that it was downtown and easy for our guests to find. We had a wonderful time celebrating here and we know many other happy couples will enjoy it just as much as we did.
